Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This book chapter reviews, for the practicing gastroenterologist: 1) basic knowledge in human nutrition, 2) the diagnosis of malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in patients, 3) the circumstances in which protein-calorie malnutrition needs to be aggressively addressed in patients, 4) some of the notable complications of initiating feeding malnourished patients, and 5) management of the patient with severe intestinal malabsorption. The science that underlies each of these principles, as well as the practical means of instituting these principles in clinical practice is provided.
