Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This report summarizes the reactions of 387 sweet corn hybrids to Stewart’s wilt, common rust, maize dwarf mosaic virus, Southern leaf blight, and Northern leaf blight based on their performance in the University of Illinois sweet corn disease nursery in 2009. The reactions of these hybrids to three herbicides inhibiting the 4-hydroxyphenyl-pyruvate-dioxygenase enzyme applied postemergence also are reported, including mesotrione, tembotrione, and topramezone. None of the hybrids were injured by topramezone. Eleven hybrids were seriously injured by tembotrione and mesotrione. Six of these 11 hybrids are known to be homozygous for a mutant cytochrome P450 (CYP) allele that conditions sensitivity to several P450-metabolized, postemergence herbicides. Of the 42 hybrids that were known to be heterozygous for these CYP alleles, none were injured by tembotrione, while 23 were mildly or moderately injured by mesotrione.
