Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Weed control is an important component of producing high quality and high yielding alfalfa seed and forage. Flumioxazin was evaluated for weed control in alfalfa forage and seed production in 2007 and 2008 in Washington State. Flumioxazin applied at 0.14 and 0.28 kg ai/ha plus paraquat in February to dormant alfalfa planted the previous fall inhibited early growth of alfalfa and forage yields of the first cutting in 1 of 2 years. Early growth of alfalfa planted September 5 or later tended to be inhibited by flumioxazin more than alfalfa planted August 15 in both years. Alfalfa forage yield of the second cutting was not reduced by flumioxazin. Forage yield of established alfalfa treated with flumioxazin at 0.14 kg ai/ha plus paraquat at 0.56 kg ai/ha in February was similar to that treated with currently registered herbicides. Established alfalfa treated with flumioxazin at 0.14 kg ai/ha or 0.28 kg ai/ha plus paraquat in February produced seed yields similar to treating with other currently registered preemergence herbicides or paraquat alone.
