Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Dry edible beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) have many health benefits attributed to their high content of protein, non-digestible starches, fiber, and other bioactive components. Hulls from dry beans are rich in phenolics known to possess antioxidant activity that is beneficial to human health. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of pinto bean hull extract on serum biomarkers of bone metabolism and bone structure in male C57BL/6 mice aged 12 mo fed either a control or extract-supplemented (400 or 800 mg/kg) diet for 3 months. The diet with 800 mg extract/kg decreased serum tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase and parathyroid hormone concentrations compared to either the control or the 400 mg extract/kg diet. Compared to the control diet, bean hull extract supplementation decreased blood oxidized glutathione concentration. Bone mineral density and trabecular thickness in the third lumbar vertebra were marginally improved in mice fed 800 mg/kg diet as compared to control mice. These results suggest that bean hull extract supplementation may slow age-related bone loss by decreasing bone resorption.
