Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: U.S. biodiesel production is presently estimated at 800 million gallons annually, and this fuel is no longer a research curiosity - it is entering the nation’s fuel infrastructure. Some estimates are that production will reach nearly twice that value in the next 10 to 12 years. This would stress available lipid supplies and cause price increases. Accordingly there is interest in the identification and development of new lipid sources for biodiesel production. This chapter provides an overview and examination of new, nontraditional biodiesel feedstock lipids. Also, as the industry develops, efforts are being made to develop new catalytic technologies that are faster, give purer products, or have a reduced environmental burden than the conventional methods for biodiesel production. These new catalytic approaches are also reviewed here.
