Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This project includes studies led by both USDA-ARS and University of Missouri scientists, with a goal of optimizing irrigated crop production and protecting soil and water resources in the Mid-South. Our interdisciplinary team investigates ways to improve irrigation scheduling and mechanized-irrigation-system management in spatially-variable soils; use of commercial sensors to provide information regarding crop water status and flood-water depth; flood tolerance among cotton and soybean cultivars and plant introductions to reduce the risks associated with irrigating in humid climates; advantages and limitations to site-specific irrigation; and the water quality impacts of irrigated agriculture. We include both small plot studies and on-farm research with active participation by crop producers and crop advisors, as well as cooperation with other state and federal agencies. Some of the studies under MU leadership are reported elsewhere in this University of Missouri Delta Center Annual Report. Studies under ARS leadership are included in this report.
