Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: In this report, we introduce two types of processes for the production of biopolymer composites: one is fabricated by bonding biopolymers with corn protein or wheat protein and the other by bonding starch with a synthetic polymer. These two types of biopolymer composites make use of the strong bonding characteristics of the proteins and highly polar synthetic polymers. The compressive strength of the former composite is comparable to that of polypropylene and more than twice stronger than that of polypropylene in the case of the latter composite. Incorporation of electrically conducting fillers such as carbon black and graphite into the aforementioned biopolymer composite yielded highly conductive materials. In both cases, the conductance of the final product was high enough to be used for commercial application.
