Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This volume of Plant Breeding Reviews is dedicated to Anthony (Tony) H. D. Brown known internationally for his research in conservation and population genetics and plant breeding. Dr. Brown's primary contributions in the area of conservation genetics followed two major themes – optimum sampling strategies and core collections. His life's activities in this area were primarily inspired by his long friendship and close working relationship with Sir Otto Frankel. His research in population genetics focused on the estimation of mating systems and their impact on plant population structure while his research in breeding was on the use of wild relatives in crop improvement. Dr. Brown started with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) Division of Plant Industry in 1972 as a research scientist and he retired as a chief research scientist in 2006. He is now an Honorary Research Fellow in the Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research, CSIRO Division of Plant Industry, Canberra, Australia.
