Technical Abstract: Traps combined with attractants are an integral component in mosquito population and arbovirus surveillance conducted by mosquito control organizations. Trap and attractant choice is based on the efficacy, handling, and storage costs associated with field use. Field studies were conducted to compare a new granular formulation of CO2, with commonly used attractants, 1-octen-3-ol and CO2 in the form of dry ice by using two different types of traps in St. Johns County, Florida. Counterflow geometry (CFG) traps and CDC light traps were baited with granular media CO2 sachet, carbon dioxide, and octenol. A total of 18 species of mosquitoes (19,357 adult females) were collected over the 4 months (July-October 2003) of study with the most common species being Culex nigripalpus (59%), Anopheles crucians (15%), Ochlerotatus atlanticus (7.4%), Oc. Infirmuatus (5.4%), and Psorophora columiae (9.3%). CDC traps baited with dry ice (64%) collected significantly more number of mosquitoes than traps baited with CO2 sachets (11%) or octenol (23%). The CFG traps baited with dry ice (85.5%) collected significantly more mosquitoes than traps baited with CO2 sachets (6.5%) or octenol (9%).
