Interpretive Summary: Development of biorational insecticides from plant extracts holds promise for many farmers in developing countries as an affordable alternative to commercially available pesticides. The chemical Andrographolide was isolated using ethanol extraction of leaves from Andrographis paniculata, an annual herbaceous plant in the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. When evaluated it showed significant effects against a lepidopteran pest: Spodoptera litura. The results suggest that andrographolide has potential for development as a biorational product to protect plants from lepidopteran and other chewing insect pests such as beetles and grasshoppers.

Technical Abstract: Development of biorational insecticides from plant extracts, holds promise for many farmers in developing countries as an affordable alternative to commercially available pesticides. The chemical andrographolide was isolated using ethanol extraction of the leaves of Andrographis paniculata, an annual herbaceous plant in the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka. Results showed significant larvae mortality, and changes in enzyme profiles in larvae and adult Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera). The compound showed significant activity between 5-25 parts-per-million, post ingestion. Morphological deformities in larvae and pupae were correlated with cell toxicity in the digestive tract. Enzymatic profiles altered included reduction of acid phosphatase activity, 69.18 percent; reduction of alkaline phosphatase activity, 75.3 percent; and a reduction of 74.9 percent ATPase activity. The results suggest that andrographolide has potential for development as a significant inhibitor of lepidopteran development, and may work as a biorational against other chewing insect pests.
