Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A Flagship Project on Water Saving Technologies was formed under the protocol between the USDA and Ministry of Science and Technology of the People's Republic of China. Joint work in this flagship project was reported at the 13th Joint Working Group Meeting on Agricultural Science and Technology in Berkeley, California. Since October 1, 2014, three scientific conferences and workshops were convened in China, one a Conference on Water Saving Technologies in conjunction with the World Congress of CIGR, one an IAEA Research Coordination Meeting on Salinity in Agriculture, both in Beijing, and a third one a Workshop on Water Use Efficiency in Irrigation at Northwest Agricultural and Forest University in Yangling, China. In addition to these meetings in which both Chinese and USDA-ARS scientists spoke, there have been numerous scientific exchanges in the form of site visits, cooperative research efforts, graduate student research at several ARS locations and Chinese research facilities dealing with irrigated agriculture, including subsurface drip irrigation, center pivot irrigation systems, irrigation management and sensor-based irrigation scheduling. A joint conference on Water Saving Technologies is planned for November 2015 in Long Beach, Califfornia in conjunction with the Irrigation Association international meeting.
