Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Like other annual crops, sunflowers are fed upon by a variety of insect pests capable of reducing yields. Though there are a few insects which are considered consistent or severe (e.g., sunflower moth, banded sunflower moth, red sunflower seed weevil), many more insects are capable of causing problems occasionally or over small areas. The most basic step in identifying a pest and managing its populations can be characterizing the crop damage, which relates to the location of the pest and type of feeding. As a result, information on the insect pests is organized by location and type of feeding, including: defoliators, sap feeders, stem borers and head feeders. For each insect, information on its distribution, injury to the plant, positive identification and management are provided.
