Ghrelin. Molecular Metabolism. 4(6):437-460. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: The gut hormone ghrelin was discovered in 1999. In the last 15 years, ample data have been generated on ghrelin. Bedsides its hallmark function as an appetite stimulator, ghrelin also has many other important functions. In this review, we discussed ghrelin's functions in learning and memory, gut movement and food digestion, sleep/wake rhythm, reward seeking behavior, taste sensation and glucose regulation. It is anticipated that this comprehensive review will serve as millstone summary for ghrelin research, and inspire future discoveries. |
