Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A new strategy to avoid ammonia emissions from anaerobically digested swine manure was tested using the gas-permeable membrane process. Evaluation of the efficiency of ammonia recovery from digestate as well as mitigation of ammonia emissions to the atmosphere were carried out. Digestate was collected from the digester of a 500 kilowatt biogas plant; the effluent contained an average ammonia nitrogen concentration of 5,550 milligrams per liter. The ammonia was concentrated in the recovery solution to 46,590 milligrams of nitrogen per liter that was about 9 times higher than the original digestate. Efficiency of the process was linked to the process pH with best performance at pH around 8. The system contributes to reduce NH3 emissions, and recovers nutrients from the digestate while converting ammonia into an ammonium salt fertilizer.
