Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Biobased oils come in a wide range of chemical structures as do petroleum based oils. In addition, a distinct structural difference exists between these two broad categories of oils. Previous work has shown that, in spite of the structural differences, these two categories of oils display similar properties in some tests but differ in others. For example, similar pressure viscosity coefficient was observed by these two categories of oils. On the other hand, these two categories of oils showed drastically different enhancement in the performance of extreme pressure additives. In order to further understand the effect of chemical structure on tribological properties, the friction and wear properties of biobased and petroleum based oils was investigated using a high frequency reciprocating rig (HFRR). In this presentation, the results are examined and used to build a comprehensive understanding of the effect of lubricating oil chemical structure on tribological properties.
