Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: A neonatologist doesn't need long-term memory to recall caring for babies who developed severe cholestasis leading to death or the need for a liver and/or intestinal transplant. Fortunately, there is no doubt that the situation has improved dramatically in the past 5 years. Cholestasis is resolving in neonatal patients when it didn't before. Babies with very short intestinal lengths after diseases such as necrotizing enterocolitis are being rehabilitated without needing transplants. Not every baby and not every situation has a positive outcome, but the improvement is real and has been well documented by multiple groups.
