Interpretive Summary: The tarnished plant bug is a common pest of many crops, including cotton. It is a major pest of cotton in many parts of the United States. The number of documented host plants of the tarnished plant bug have increased greatly since the last published list.

Technical Abstract: The tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois), is a highly polyphagous mirid that damages economically important plants across much of the new world including vegetables, fruits, nuts, nursery stock, and fiber. It is a primary pest of cotton across the mid-south of the United States, causing economic damage. An updated list of host plants was compiled from the literature, greatly increasing the number of host plant records from 326 to at least 700. The distribution of L. lineolaris has been recorded from state of Alaska, east to the Canadian province of Newfoundland, and south to Guatemala; currently available literature extends that range through Central America and into South America.
