Technical Abstract: The 12th I. E. Melhus Graduate Student Symposium was held on 6 August 2012 during the Annual meeting of the American Phytopathological Society (APS) in Providence, RI. The theme for this symposium was “Host Plant Resistance and Disease Management: Current Status and Future Outlook”. The APS Host Resistance Committee, in conjunction with financial support from the APS Foundation sponsored the 12th I. E. Melhus Graduate Student Symposium. The symposium featured four graduate student presentations highlighting research that leads to a better understanding of host plant resistance, resistance breeding, and disease management. Each presenter received a travel award of $500. The I.E. Melhus symposium has been held annually since 1999 and is one of the most prestigious APS annual meeting events. The symposium was organized by; Shaker Kousik, Pradeep Kachroo, Patrick Wechter and Alemu Mengistu.
