Interpretive Summary: Common bacterial blight is an important biotic factor limiting common bean production. A few interspecific bean breeding lines such as VAX 6 exhibit a high level of resistance. In this study, the inheritance of high levels of resistance to common bacterial blight with the pathogenic strain Xap UPR 3353 was evaluated in a population derived from a cross between the breeding line PR0313-58, which has moderate levels of resistance and VAX 6, which has high levels of resistance to common bacterial blight. The results suggest that in this population two putative dominant complementary genes confer high levels of resistance to bacterial blight caused by strain Xap UPR 3353. White and black bean lines that combine high levels of common bacterial blight resistance, heat tolerance and resistance to BGYMV and BCMV virus were identified in this study. These lines could contribute to higher common bean yield where these diseases are prevalent.

Technical Abstract: Common bacterial blight caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Xap) is an important biotic factor limiting common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) production. A few interspecific bean breeding lines such as VAX 6 exhibit a high level of resistance to a wide range of Xap strains representing different pathogenic races. Common bacterial blight evaluations were conducted in the field and greenhouse on F2 plants and F2:3 lines. The inheritance of resistance to Xap 3353 was studied using Chi-squared tests in the F2 and F3 generations.
