Technical Abstract: Aquaculture is currently the fastest growing sector of global food production. Global aquaculture production in 2011 totaled 60 million tonnes (excluding aquatic plants) valued at US$119 billion, while global capture fishery production has remained static at approximately 90 million tonnes annually for the past decade. The production of foodfish from aquaculture has increased at an average annual growth rate of 8.8% worldwide from 1980 to 2010, resulting in a 6% average rate of increase per year. Future growth and reliance on the culture of aquatic organisms for human consumption is projected to continue as global population and consumer demand increases, and capture fisheries become less efficient at meeting that demand. The mission of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Harry K. Dupree Stuttgart National Aquaculture Research Center (HKDSNARC) is to conduct cutting-edge research that address the highest priorities of the U.S. aquaculture industry. In this article, we hope that you will get an idea of who we are and what we do. Current research projects and new data will be discussed as well as mention of future directions and research foci.
