Interpretive Summary: Aquaculture is a major global industry with a total annual production of over 50 million tons and an estimated value of approximately $80 billion. Among different aquaculture species, shrimp aquaculture is a major source of export revenue in the countries with large coastal boundaries in South East Asia and in South America. The unprecedented growth of shrimp aquaculture has come with major challenges, however. Diseases caused by viruses have become one of the major hurdles that have thwarted the growth of this emerging sector of aquaculture. Periodic outbreaks of viral diseases in shrimp aquaculture have resulted in large economic losses estimated to be in the range of $1 billion per year since the emergence of white spot syndrome virus in commercial shrimp aquaculture in the mid 1990s. The challenges in developing sustainable shrimp aquaculture have been exacerbated by the emergence of new previously unknown viral diseases. A number of parvoviruses are now known to infect marine shrimp, and these viruses alone or in combination with other viruses have the potential to cause major losses in shrimp aquaculture globally. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biology, genome organization, gene expression, and evolution of parvoviruses in shrimp. The diagnostic tools that are now available for detecting diseases caused by shrimp parvoviruses are summarized. Finally, different management strategies are discussed for prevention and therapy to reduce losses caused by parvovirus infections in marine shrimp.

Technical Abstract: A number of parvoviruses are now know to infect marine shrimp, and these viruses alone or in combination with other viruses have the potential to cause major losses in shrimp aquaculture globally. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the biology, genome organization, gene expression, and evolution of parvoviruses in shrimp. The diagnostic tools that are now available for detecting diseases caused by shrimp parvoviruses are summarized. Finally, different management strategies are discussed for prevention and therapy to reduce losses caused by parvovirus infections in marine shrimp.
