Technical Abstract: The U.S. Meat Animal Research Center (U.S. MARC) conducts research in several areas to support the feedlot industry and the U.S. consumer. Several studies have been conducted to determine the nutrient value of emerging coproduct feeds and their usage in cattle of diverse genetics. The amount of methane a ruminant animal produces varies, and current research is defining underlying mechanism associated with variation in enteric methane production. Ongoing research is being conducted to predict and mitigate heat stress. Studies are being conducted to study the role of preharvest food safety on ensuring safe meat products. New genomic-based tools are being developed to aid in the selection for feed efficiency, and the development of tools to predict performance in the feedlot.
