Technical Abstract: The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite project is scheduled for launch in October 2014. Calibration and validation of its science products will occur in the period between 3 and 15 months of launch. In order to accomplish this task within the time frame, extensive preparations are required. Of particular concern is the availability and quality of in situ observations of soil moisture. It is desirable to incorporate as many sites representing diverse climates and vegetation conditions as possible. Unfortunately, many in situ resources do not provide fully calibrated data, are difficult to scale from points to footprints, or provide data for depths that do not match the SMAP products. COSMOS offers readily available observations for diverse conditions and; therefore, is of interest to SMAP. In this presentation, additional details on the SMAP calibration and validation program will be presented and suggestions on how COSMOS and other sparse networks might contribute will be discussed.
