Interpretive Summary: UI Stone Soft white spring wheat will provide grows with a spring wheat cultivar that possesses resistance to Fusarium head blight, a disease that is increasing in the Pacific Northwest with increased acreage of maize. The resistance to Fusarium head blight was obtained from a common source of resistance, FHB1 plus an additional gene. UI stone also has desirable end use quality and moderate resistance to stripe rust. It has performed competitively with other cultivars in breeding trials throughout the region.

Technical Abstract: Soft white spring wheat (Triticum aestivumL.) is an important wheat class being used in domestic and international markets, especially in Idaho and Pacific Northwest (PNW). The objective of this study was to develop a SWS wheat cultivar with high grain yield, desirable end-use quality, and resistance to fusarium head blight [FHB; caused by Fusarium graminearum Schwabe; telomorph Gibberellazeae (Schwein.) Petch], an emerging disease for spring wheat in southern Idaho and some areas in PNW. ‘UI Stone’ (Reg. No. CV------, PI660550) soft white spring wheat was developed by the Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station using a modified backcross breeding procedure. UI Stone was derived from a backcross ‘Pomerelle’ (PI 592983)*2/ ‘Tui’ (Unknown PI) made in 1994 in Aberdeen, ID and tested under experimental numbers A94368-B-7 and IDO599. Release of UI Stone is requested because of its superior grain yield under non-irrigated and irrigated production conditions in southern Idaho and PNW, its excellent end-use quality, good resistance to FHB. UI Stone has improved break flour yield and cookie baking quality compared to widely grown cultivars ‘Alturas’ (PI 620631), ‘Alpowa’ (PI 566596), and ‘UI Pettit’ (PI 620631). Heading date of UI Stone is similar to two early maturity cultivars Nick and UI Pettit but shorter than Alturas, ‘Louise’ (PI 634865), and Alpowa. FHB resistance of UI Stone was identified based on two field and three greenhouse experiments and two known molecular makers UMN10 and Xbarc117associated with resistance gene Fhb1and QTL on chromosome 5AS, respectively. UI Stone has moderate resistance to stripe rust and might require spraying fungicide if severe epidemic occurs. UI Stone has potential to be released with PVP and licensed cultivar.
