Interpretive Summary: Data tables summarizing dietary intakes of the U.S. population can readily be used by government groups, nutrition researchers, and the general public. The Food Surveys Research Group of the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center has analyzed dietary data from the What We Eat In America (WWEIA), National and Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2010 and developed 36 tables summarizing nutrient intakes from food and the contribution of protein, carbohydrate, fat, and alcohol in the American diet as well as the following: percentages of nutrients contributed by foods eaten away from home, at breakfast, at lunch, at dinner, and as snacks; distribution of snack occasions; and distribution of meal patterns. All tables are available on the FSRG Web site: www.ars.usda.gov/ba/bhnrc/fsrg. The availability and enhanced accessibility of these new tables are a benefit to users in need of current population-level information on nutrient intakes of Americans.

Technical Abstract: The Food Surveys Research Group of the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center has analyzed dietary data from the What We Eat In America (WWEIA), National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2009-2010 and released 36 summary data tables for this latest 2-year survey release. The tables provide population estimates for the following: nutrient intakes from food for energy and 64 nutrients/dietary components; percentages of energy from macronutrients; percentages of selected nutrients contributed by foods eaten away from home, at breakfast, at lunch, at dinner, and as snacks; distribution of snack occasions; and distributions of meal patterns. Estimated means and standard errors are provided for 21 age/gender groups as well as race/ethnicity and income categories. Race/ethnicity groups include non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, Mexican-American, and all Hispanic. Income data are reported as annual family income, as well as a percentage of the Federal poverty threshold. In WWEIA, NHANES, dietary intakes are collected using the USDA 5-step Automated Multiple-Pass Method. Each year data are collected from a nationally representative sample of 5,000 individuals and released at 2-year intervals. All tables are available on the FSRG Web site: www.ars.usda.gov/ba/bhnrc/fsrg.
