Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The human bot fly, Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus Jr., 1781) is a major pest of livestock in Mexico, Central and South America. Myiasis caused by the larvae result in economic losses due to hide damage and reductions in weight gain and milk production. They have a broad host range which includes wildlife, domestic animals and humans. With the increase in global travel, D. hominis myiasis is occurring more frequently in visitors to Latin America, and is often misdiagnosed by physicians. More research is needed on the biology of this pest, including laboratory rearing techniques, so more efficient control methods may be developed.
