Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Tomato (Solanum section Lycopersicon) is composed of 12 wild Solanum spp. and one domesticated (S. lycopersicum) taxon. Crop improvement for development of new cultivars and their spread to all regions of the globe has greatly relied on interspecific hybrid crosses with wild species taxa beginning in the early 20th century. This survey of sequences sampled from five wild tomato species and one weedy S. lycopersicum (Peru Wild) was used to help identify species origins of alleles that were introgressed onto S. lycopersicum. We found supporting evidence of introgression at nine of 47 markers. The results have enhanced our understanding of patterns of S. lycopersicum genetic diversity and will lead to more efficient utilization of wild species gene pools in crop improvement.
