Interpretive Summary: Pasteurella multocida is a causative agent for prevalent and serious septicemic and respiratory diseases in a broad range of hosts. This bacterium generally lacks obvious virulence factors which contribute to its ability to cause disease and therefore it is difficult to design effective vaccine countermeasures to control disease. Using high-throughput sequencing technology, the genome sequence of two virulent representative avian isolates of P. multocida was ascertained. Preliminary analysis shows clear differences between these two strains and a previously sequenced non-virulent strain. Study of these unique differences, and those between avian and ruminant isolates, will yield a better understanding of disease pathogenesis and insight into new potential disease control methods.

Technical Abstract: Here we report the draft genome sequences of two virulent avian strains of Pasteurella multocida. Comparative analyses of these genomes were done with the published genome sequence of avirulent Pasteurella multocida strain Pm70.
