Interpretive Summary: Flavobacterium columnare is a bacterial fish pathogen that causes columnaris disease in freshwater fish, including catfish. Collaborative research between Mississippi State University, University of Oklahoma, Marmara University (Turkey), Tuskeege University, and the USDA, ARS, Catfish Genetics Research Unit led to the production of the complete genome sequence of this bacteria. Knowledge of the genome will help scientists to develop methods for detection, determine mechanisms of pathogenesis, and develop methods and reagents to help reduce columnaris disease in cultured fish.

Technical Abstract: Flavobacterium columnare is a Gram-negative, rod shaped, motile, and highly prevalent fish pathogen causing columnaris disease in freshwater fish worldwide. Here, we present the complete genome sequence of F. columnare strain ATCC 49512.
