Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Bisphosphonates and vinyl phosphonates are two classes of compounds that have much potential, namely as pharmaceutical agents and synthetic building blocks. Previous studies have shown success in synthesizing these compounds from hydroxy fatty acids (HFAs) found in Ricinus communis, commonly known as castor. We have proposed the same synthetic plan for HFAs derived from Lesquerella fendleri. Using lesquerolic acid as our base HFA, we have modified the carboxyl moiety to produce two families of phosphonate derivatives. The synthesis of these derivatives will be presented.
