Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The hypothesis advanced in this issue of Cellulose, that the solubility or insolubility characteristics of cellulose are significantly based upon amphiphilic and hydrophobic molecular interactions, is bound to shake the roots of (some of) our textbook wisdom. The hypothesis is based on the considerations of some fundamental polymer physicochemical principles laid out by Lindman et al. I have invited several (selected) experts of the topic to provide comments relevant to the hypothesis. This is meant to provide a platform for open debate with the hope that new research is stimulated on this issue.
