Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV), an Aphthovirus of the Picornaviridae, is one of the most intensely studied viruses yet the mechanisms by which it causes the highly transmissible disease FMD are largely unknown. A summary of current understanding of the molecular basis of FMDV interaction with the host will be discussed with special attention to three subjects: host interactions with (i) the viral RNA genome with its unique RNA secondary structures, each with a distinct role in the virus life cycle; (ii) the viral proteins that are translated from the positive-sense RNA genome; and (iii) the host proteins that are necessarily co-opted by the virus to fulfill its replication cycle, to produce one of the most contagious diseases known of animals and man.
