Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: To develop a bivalent vaccine candidate, a LaSota strain-based recombinant Newcastle disease virus (NDV) clone expressing the glycoprotein (G) of avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) subgroup A or B was generated using reverse genetics. Vaccination of turkeys with the NDV/aMPV-A G or NDV/aMPV-B G recombinant virus conferred complete protection against virulent NDV challenge and partial protection against homologous aMPV-A or aMPV-B challenge. These results suggest that expression of the G protein alone is not sufficient to provide full protection against an aMPV infection. Expression of additional immunogenic aMPV proteins may be needed to induce stronger protective immunity against the aMPV infections.
