Technical Abstract: The current dependence of the world economy on petroleum cannot be sustained in the long run. Petroleum is expected to be depleted in the foreseeable future. In addition, the use of petroleum causes carbon dioxide emissions leading to global warming. Renewable sources need to be explored. One of the petroleum alternatives is vegetable oil. Currently, vegetable oils are used, or have been investigated, in most major product categories – diesel, jet fuel, polymer, lubricants, etc. In the current talk, an incomplete review of some of the non-food uses of vegetable oils will be made. In addition, the synthesis of two vegetable oil-based potential lubricants will be presented. They were synthesized and evaluated in the presenter’s lab, and subjected to some standard tests to determine their potential as lubricant additives.
