Technical Abstract: There is a need for more environmentally-friendly and renewable lubricants that can be met by formulating lubricating blends with bio-based components. One of the most important properties of lubricants is its ability to form films between moving parts, such as those encountered in gears and bearings. In the presentation, we will report the study of the viscosity and elastohydrodynamic (EHD) film thickness properties of binary blends of vegetable oils with synthetic oil. The viscosities of the blends were correlated with the predictions of existing theoretical models. The EHD film thicknesses were used to calculate the pressure-viscosity coefficients (PVC) of the blends. The results for the PVC are compared with the literature data for similar oils. The PVC of soybean and canola oils were close to the estimated ones from a single mixing rule. The EHD film thickness and PVC of the blends containing castor oil displayed complex dependence on the composition of the blends and could not be fully described with the existing simple models.
