Technical Abstract: Cyclones are predominately used in controlling cotton gin particulate matter (PM) emissions. The most commonly used cyclone designs are the 2D-2D and 1D-3D; however other designs such as the 1D-2D KGM have or are currently being used. A 1D-2D cyclone has a barrel length equal to the barrel diameter and a cone length of two times the barrel diameter. The size of these cyclones may vary between process streams and cotton gins. This study focuses on the 1D-2D KGM cyclone design. Total, total suspended particulate (TSP), PM10 (PM less than 10 microns in aerodynamic equivalent diameter), and PM2.5 (PM less than 2.5 microns in aerodynamic equivalent diameter) collection efficiencies associated with specific cyclone designs were determined for various loading rates, loading material compositions, and cyclone inlet velocities. Efficiencies associated with each treatment will be determined through gravimetric and particle size analyses of the products fed into, captured by, and emitted by the cyclone.
