Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Phytophagous insects play an important role in classical biological control. This chapter is divided into 6 paragraphs: 1) we present firstly the history and the context of biocontrol, 2) we detail the impact of herbivory on the target plants; 3) we specify the different groups of insects that have a major impact of plant fitness; 4)steps of selection of herbivores are presented from foreign exploration to laboratory tests; 5) successes and failures are detailed over the last century with a particular emphasis on two case studies; 6) non target effects are mentioned with considerations on how risky/safe is biocontrol in a changing world.
