Interpretive Summary: The black vine and other weevils are severe pests of field and container-grown rhododendron and azalea. In order to manage these pests effectively, growers must have a firm understanding of their life cycle and behavior. Current weevil management options include 1) host plant resistance, 2) conventional insecticides targeted against adults, 3) conventional insecticides targeted against larvae, 4) exclusion and 5) biological control agents targeted against larvae. Implementation of multiple strategies targeting adults and larvae will provide the greatest levels of control.

Technical Abstract: Otiorhynchus sulcatus and other members of the genus are severe pests of field and container-grown rhododendron and azalea. In order to manage these pests effectively, growers must have a firm understanding of their life cycle and behavior. Proper identification of the pest complex present at the nursery is also critical in order to properly time management strategies. Current weevil management options include 1) host plant resistance, 2) conventional insecticides targeted against adults, 3) conventional insecticides targeted against larvae, 4) exclusion and 5) biological control agents targeted against larvae. Implementation of multiple strategies targeting adults and larvae will provide the greatest levels of control.
