Interpretive Summary: The common is susceptible to many diseases that reduce seed yields, seed quality, and increase production costs of dry beans. We are registering “Croissant”, a new pinto dry bean cultivar with resistance to multiple diseases. It has resistance to the bean rust disease, to the viruses that cause bean common mosaic and bean common mosaic necrosis, and to common bacterial blight. These attributes are extremely important in reducing the dependence on pesticides and dry bean production costs. Equally important, Croissant combines excellent yield and pinto seed color with upright architecture for direct harvest. Thus, Croissant will provide bean growers a high yielding pinto cultivar with upright architecture and resistance to several diseases. These are essential characteristics that make possible a sustainable and economically viable dry bean production. These results are expected to benefit pinto dry bean producers in the high planes and Western US.

Technical Abstract: Croissant (Reg. No. CV- ,PI 656597), a new medium maturity (94 to 98 d) pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) cultivar was released by the Colorado Agricultural Experiment Station to provide growers with a high yielding cultivar that combines resistance to rust [caused by Uromyces appendiculatus (Pers.) Unger], most strains of Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV) and Bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) (both seed-borne, insect-vectored potyviruses), and field tolerance to common bacterial blight (CBB) [caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli (Smith) Dye, Syn. with X. campestris]. Croissant has semi-upright architecture (CIAT Type IIb) in most environments; however, in environments with high N and soil moisture it can express semi-vine architecture (Type IIIa). Resistance to rust is conditioned by the combination of Ur-3 and Ur-6 dominant alleles, resistance to BCMV is conditioned by the recessive allele bc22 and Croissant possesses the SAP 6 marker that confers a limited level of field resistance to strains of common bacterial blight endemic to the High Plains region of the USA. Croissant was tested in the Cooperative Dry Bean Nursery in 2008 and 2009. Mean seed yield was 3102 and 2895 kg ha-1 and mean seed weights were 36.2 and 36.3 g 100 seed-1 over 10 and 11 locations in 2008 and 2009, respectively. Croissant has excellent seed color and commercially acceptable seed size (36.3 g 100 seed-1).
