Research Project: IMPROVED PLANT GENETIC RESOURCES FOR PASTURES AND RANGELANDS IN THE TEMPERATE SEMIARID REGIONS OF THE WESTERN U.S.

Title: Genetic resources of forage and grain legume crops of the central region of the Russian federation (on materials of expedition of 2008 in region of southern Ural mountains)

Interpretive Summary: In the article, the results of the international expedition under the guidance of N.I. Vavilov All-Russian Research Institute of Plant Industry are stated. An overall objective of expedition gathering was exemplary wild-growing fodder and leguminous cultures which are of interest for selection on stability to limiting factors of environment. The participants of the expedition - science officers of VIR (Russia), the Ustimivs'ka Research Station for Plant Industry (Ukraine) and the Utah State University (USA). The republic of Bashkortostan territory (7 ranges) and the Chelyabinsk area (5 ranges) is surveyed. Gathering of collection samples is in 45 sites. Length of a route - 5900 km. The basic part of gathering is made on upland meadows of various degree of humidifying - from droughty water separate, up to mesophillous meadows on terraces of the rivers, transitive on ecological conditions to the present inundated meadows. In total during the expedition, 333 samples have been collected. These long-term fodder cereals (orchard-grass, fescue, timothy, meadow-grass, bent-grass, brome grass, wheatgrass, meadow foxtail, wild rye, etc.) - 90; long-term fodder bean (melilot, clover, alfalfa, bird's foot trefoil, sainfoin, milk-vetch) - 70; forage crops not in current use (dock, burnet) - 2; leguminous (vetch, vetchling) - 38. For the Ukrainian party also collected 40 samples of decorative cultures (arboreal, burnet) and 96 samples of vegetables, fruits, technical, groats and corn crops. The samples of wild-growing forage and grain legume crops collected in the territory of the Southern Urals Mountains are identified as to signs of high efficiency, drought resistance, earliness, characterised by a complex of adaptive qualities to adverse conditions of environment and are a valuable initial material for selection. The collected material is divided between three partner sides.
