Technical Abstract: This manuscript describes the accomplishments in genetics and breeding of watermelon, dealing with crop origin and major diseases and pests. It also describes the recent advances in genomics of watermelon and construction of physical map and genetic maps for watermelon. It elucidates challenges in enhancing watermelon cultivars for disease and pest resistance, genetic mapping, and identification of disease resistance genes. It also describes the genome sequencing using 454 and Solexa technologies, and the potential use of the genomics and genetic tools for improving watermelon.
