Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Previous investigations have established the basis for a new type of vegetation index based on passive microwave satellite observations. These microwave vegetation indices (MVIs) have been qualitatively evaluated by examining global spatial and seasonal temporal features. Limited quantitative studies of the relationship between the MVIs and vegetation water content have been attempted with available data sets. These studies have revealed that while the first order patterns and relationships with other indices and variables exist, there are other factors involved that are either not being interpreted correctly or require additional corrections. The basis of the MVIs and the influence of second order effects are being reexamined. In this presentation recent results are reviewed that include atmospheric parameters
