Technical Abstract: The plasma membrane intrinsic proteins (PIP) are one of the five aquaporin protein subfamilies. Aquaporin proteins are known to facilitate water transport through biological membranes. In order to identify NIP aquaporin gene candidates in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.), in silico and molecular cloning efforts and subsequent sequence analyses were performed. We report the submission of 24 cotton PIP subfamily genes to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Thirteen genes belonged to a PIP1 subgroup and 11 genes to a PIP2 subgroup. These data help to understand structural and functional characteristics of PIP genes in cotton.
