Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Polymers from vegetable oils, such as soybean oil, were prepared by cationic polymerization in supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) medium. Boron trifluoride diethyl etherate (BF3.OEt2) was selected as catalyst. The resulting polymers have molecular weight ranging from 21,842 to 118,300 g/mol. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) and gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis confirmed the polymerization had occurred. Results showed that the longer reaction time, up to three hours, favored the higher molecular weight of polymers at conditions of 140 deg C and initiator, BF3.OEt2, at 0.018 mol. When reaction time was increased further, the molecular weight of polymers stayed the same or slightly decreased. Increased amount of initiator gave the higher molecular weight of polymers. These soy polymers would be evaluated applications in the hydrogels, polymeric surfactant and other areas through the chemical modifications.
