Technical Abstract: Oat-maize addition (OMA) lines with one, or occasionally more, chromosomes of maize (Zea mays L., 2n=2x=20) added to oat (Avena sativa L., 2n=6x=42) can be developed from oat x maize crosses. Self-fertile disomic addition lines for maize chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, short arm of 10, and a monosomic addition line of chromosome 8 have been previously reported in which the sweet corn hybrid Seneca 60 served as maize chromosome donor. A collection of disomic addition lines have recently been recovered using inbreds B73 and Mo17 as maize donors. Fertile disomic B73 OMA lines were recovered for chromosomes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 and Mo17 OMA lines for chromosomes 2, 4, 5, 6, and 10. Radiation hybrid lines produced by gamma irradiation of Seneca 60 OMA lines resulted in fertile alien segment addition oat lines with maize sub-chromosomal segments. These break lines contain a fragment of an individual maize chromosome through complex rearrangements, including interstitial deletions and translocations to oat. This further dissection of maize chromosomes represents approximately 685 lines that are characterized by 408 maize SSR markers and categorized into low or medium resolution mapping panels for maize chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, and 10. The developed materials provide the ability to rapidly map DNA sequences to maize chromosomes and chromosome segments, analyze maize gene expression in an alien (oat) background, and potentially transfer traits from maize to oat.
