Technical Abstract: As with many crops, chlorophyll fluorescence emission is a promising tool for measuring responses of sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) to biotic and abiotic stresses. Chlorophyll fluorescence can be easily measured using portable fluorometers. However, several factors should be considered in order to optimize efficiency of data collection. The purpose of this presentation is to evaluate the effects of leaf measurement surface, number of measurements, dark-period duration, and leaf storage during the dark period on sugarcane chlorophyll fluorescence measurements with a portable fluorometer. Four replications of eight sugarcane genotypes were planted in pots filled either with organic (muck) soil, sand soil, or sand soil with organic matter added.
