Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: This book is an outstanding contribution to our current, applied knowledge on markets of ecosystems services. In an integrated framework of study, the authors assessed the opportunities and limitations of carbon sequestration mainly via reforestation, hydrological services (water quantity and quality), and biodiversity prospection and management in highly diverse markets within the context of the Panama Canal Watershed. This is indeed an amazingly rich case study because as a country, about half of Panama’s population lives within the Panama Canal Watershed. In addition, the Panama Canal plays a prominent role in the local economy. Therefore, this is a critical scenario with high pressure on the limited, existing natural resources, and an excellent setting for studying feasibility and potential implementation of markets for ecosystems services. |
