Technical Abstract: A one-day biotechnology symposium was held at Alabama A&M University (AAMU), Normal, AL on June 4, 2004 in memory of the late Dr. Allan Zipf (Sept 1953-Jan 2004). Dr. Zipf was a Research Associate Professor at the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, AAMU, who collaborated extensively with ARS/MSA scientists to provide the best educational and research opportunities for students and staff at AAMU. This symposium was organized by Dr. K. Rajasekaran, ARS, SRRC, New Orleans and S. Saha, ARS, Mississippi State. Several ARS, industry, and university scientists, many of whom had successful research collaboration with Dr. Zipf, presented their research on topics pertaining to crop biotechnology, genetics, breeding, tissue culture and genetic transformation, genomics and proteomics as applied to crop breeding. A book of abstracts was edited, published and distributed to participants and libraries at the symposium.
