Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Information on the fate of pesticides in a golf course environment was presented to science professionals and golf course personnel at the Minnesota Golf Course Superintendents' Association March Mini-Seminar in Bloomington, MN, on 6 March 2007. Topics presented included: the definition of pesticides; benefits and risks of pesticide use; pesticide use in the United States; public concerns of pesticide use; detection of pesticides in surface waters; how do we assess risk?; general terms of toxicology; measuring toxicity; how toxic are everyday chemicals versus pesticides?; golfer exposure to pesticide treated turf; environmental fate of pesticides in soil, water, and air; toxicity of older and newer pesticides; and management practices that can reduce the risk of pesticides applied to turf. This presentation served as educational credits for golf course superintendents and provided information that will be use by golf course personnel to make informed decisions that provide quality turf while protecting human health and surrounding environmental ecosystems. |
