Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Most girls with Rett syndrome present a challenge when it comes to providing enough nutrition. Even those with healthy appetites are usually quite thin and short, and many meet the definition for protein-energy malnutrition. Girls with RTT have lower dietary energy intakes than unaffected girls. The result of insufficient dietary intake is thinness, loss of muscle, and decreased resistance to infection. Nutritional rehabilitation, fluids and dehydration, increasing weight, feeding problems, and gastrostomy tubes and buttons constitute issues that require consideration. Nutrition and feeding are important aspects of care that improve quality of life and make other therapies possible. |
